Sassy - Cypher & Slam

We're throwing a slam and cypher night to celebrate The Sassy Show's 3rd birthday and we want you to join our circle. Welcoming newbies, old bees, and all those inbetweens, take a leap of faith and share your creative Sassy spirit with us in a safe and supportive party environment.

What is a slam? A slam is a competitive art event in which poets/rappers/singers/ spoken word artists/speakers take turns to perform in speedy 30 sec -1min segments before an open circle and a panel of judges. While formats can vary, slams are often loud and lively, with audience participation, cheering and dramatic delivery. Hip-hop music and urban culture are strong influences.

What is a cypher? A cypher is a freestyle dance jam where an open circle is created and people take turns dancing in the center in speedy 30 sec -1min segments. DJs will provide the music and audience participation of cheering is encouraged. The cypher (or cipher) has deep, long-standing cultural roots in hip hop culture, African tradition and religious beliefs.

Host and Judges: Meet musician and performer Black Magic Womxn, host of the Sassy Slam! Joining her will be our panel of judges including Cuban Timbre musician Eliane Correa, and founder of POPOLA party Dj Ivicore. More guest judges and DJs tbc.
