CIMARRON FOLKLORICO : The CIMARRON FESTIVAL closing event, showcases the folkloric expressions of 3 Latin American countries: Perú, Colombia and Venezuela, with three bands playing a rich variety of folkloric rhythms from their home countries.
From Peru:
Dora de La Cruz and ‘Soy Perú’
Dora de La Cruz and ‘Soy Perú’ , currently one of the very few traditional Afro Peruvian bands in London. Hailing from Lima, Dora is one of the main exponents of Afro Peruvian music or ‘Musica Criolla’ in the UK, which is a mixture of West African, indigenous and Spanish music. She comes from a family of folklorists in her native Perú, and together with her musicians, she will be gracing our stage to deliver an amazing set of rhythms such as Festejo, Tondero and Landó, combining her vocals with Cajón, Bongoes, guitar and bass.
From Colombia:
Taty Tambo y su Combo
Taty is an ethnomusicologist and percussionist from Santa Martha in the Colombian Caribbean Coast, as well as a teacher, workshop leader, folkloric events organiser and researcher of traditional Afro-Colombian music. She has played extensively throughout Colombia and Europe, and having recently arrived in the UK, she has now integrated into the London thriving Afro Latin scene. One of her many projects is ‘Juntas Sonoras’ which focuses on training women to play traditional Colombian music.
Her band Taty Tambo y su Combo is an all women ensemble, who have dedicated time and effort to learning the language and beat of the drum, and the many rhythms from the Colombian Caribbean. They will be playing a set of beautiful call and response chants over energetic and trance infusing drumming. Expect an exuberant performance of Cumbia, Bullerengue Sentao, Chalupa and Fandango from this amazing all female outfit.
From Venezuela:
Wilmer Sifontes and his Afroamerica Project
The only band of it’s kind in the UK, playing mainly Afro Venezuelan rhythms whilst occasionally branching out to various other styles from the Lain Caribbean!
Wilmer Sifontes from Caracas Venezuela, has established himself as one of London’s leading Latin Percussionists, with a career spanning over 3 decades of consistent playing, touring, and music production of the highest level. He is musical director of the mighty Conjunto Sabroso, and his own Wil Sifontes Latin Sound Quintet, as well as his Afroamerica Project.
Wilmer has worked with many personalities from the Latin and World Music circuit such as Salsa Celtica, celebrated Sitar and Tabla player Baluji Shrivastav, Iranian percussionist Hussein Zahawy, Anglo Colombian Drum and Bass project Side Stepper and Clásico Latino, as well as backing many visiting Salsa legends with Conjunto Sabroso, such as Tito Nieves, Adalberto Santiago, Roberto Torres, Henry Fiol, Herman Olivera, to name a few. Also some memorable appearances with artists such as Luis Silva, Andrés Cepeda and Colombian grammy winners Aterciopelados.
Wilmer Sifontes and Afroamerica Project will be delighting us with some of the joyous and syncretised rhythms from Venezuela such as Parrandas, Gaita de Tambor, Calypsos and Golpe de Tambor!
