About the Event

We have come together to offer you a taste of ‘Carnaval de Barranquilla’ with music, dance and film to shine a spotlight on different aspects of this very special occasion.   After the success of the last Somos Chibchas event, we couldn’t miss the opportunity to honour Colombia's number 1 carnival with another special event at The Post Bar on Sunday 19th February. For the first part of the evening and by popular demand, Somos Chibchas will be returning to host another carnival-themed Colombian dance workshop, with live percussion from Rafa Semilla. Following the workshop, we'll be screening the wonderful film 'La Nave' which shows different perceptions of carnival through the eyes of a variety of communities—indigenous, trans, queer, rural, Afro-Colombian and radical outsiders, followed by a Q&A with the director Carlos Maria Romero (aka Atabey Mamasita)). Lastly and to wrap up the evening, DJs Amancai and Cal Jader return to celebrate Barranquilla tunes from the classics to the contemporary Champeta to Salsa and Afro-Palenquero rhythms. We're donating a % of the door profits to the Fundación Lokassa, promoting Afro-Colombian culture in the Caribbean area of Colombia.

-DJs Amancai + Cal Jader 'La Nave' (52mins) Colombian artist and first-time filmmaker Carlos Maria Romero (aka Atabey Mamasita) translates the meaning and spirit of Carnival de Barranquilla during a year in which gatherings were forbidden. Through clandestinely filmed performances with members of many different communities—indigenous, trans, queer, rural, Afro-Colombian and radical outsiders among them—Maria Romero recreates northern Colombia’s largest cultural event as an essayistic performance film, demonstrating how Carnival is a lifeblood to its many diverse participants. - Somos Chibchas is dedicated to showcasing and sharing Colombian culture and folklore and the influences of the art and heritage of the African diaspora. - Movimientos is one of the most active events organisations in the UK focused on promoting Latin American music & culture.
